Power window repair
A window that will not go up is a security problem tonight and a weather problem by morning. If the glass is intact but it is stuck, slow, crooked or has dropped into the door, the fault is in the mechanism behind the door panel, and that is a job for someone who takes door panels off every day.
Stuck, slow or off track
We find out whether it is the regulator, the motor, the switch or the glass itself.
Behind the panel every day
Every side window we replace means a door panel off and a regulator tested.
Built for Ohio winters
Forcing a frozen window is a classic way to break a regulator. Here is how to avoid it.
What we handle
At any of our locations or on a mobile visit, we inspect the window regulator and motor for visible damage and tell you whether a replacement is needed. We do not supply regulators or motors, so replacement parts are purchased by the customer. Electrical problems, such as switch and wiring faults, are referred out.
What the symptom usually points to
You can narrow a power window problem down before anyone picks up a tool, and it helps us quote accurately if you tell us what you are seeing and hearing.
If you press the switch and nothing happens, with no sound from the door, the problem is usually electrical. Try the switch on the door itself and the master switch on the driver’s door. If neither works on one window, suspect that window’s switch, motor or wiring. If every window is dead, look at the fuse or the master switch first.
If you hear the motor running but the glass does not move, moves with a clunk or has dropped into the door, the regulator has usually failed. The regulator is the cable or arm assembly that carries the glass up and down, and a snapped cable or a broken clip lets the glass fall.
If the window is slow or stops partway, the motor may be wearing out, or the glass may be binding in dry, dirty or frozen run channels. If it goes up crooked, the glass has come off its track or a regulator arm is bent. Grinding or clicking usually means a stripped gear or a fraying cable, and it is the sound of a window that is about to stop working altogether.
Northeast Ohio winters and frozen windows
Here is the single most useful thing on this page. When the glass is frozen to the rubber seal and you hold the switch down, the motor pulls against a window that cannot move. Something has to give, and it is usually the regulator cable or the clips that hold the glass. It is one of the most common ways a regulator fails in a cold climate.
On a frozen morning, let the cabin warm up before you touch the window switches, and if the window does not move on the first press, let go. The same goes for the drive-through in January. A minute of patience is cheaper than a regulator.
What Defender does
Every side window replacement or off-track glass job we perform follows the same sequence: the door panel comes off, the broken glass is cleared out of the door, the new glass goes in, and the window regulator is tested for mechanical damage before the panel goes back on. The same skills apply when the glass is fine and the mechanism is the problem.
If the glass itself is cracked or shattered, you want our side window replacement page instead. When a break-in or an impact has damaged both, we handle them in one visit.
There is no diagnostic fee, and replacement parts are supplied by the customer.
Until your appointment
If the window is stuck down, park indoors if you can, and cover the opening from the outside with heavy plastic sheeting and tape. Do not try to pull the glass up by hand and wedge it in place. Tempered glass does not like being forced, and a panel that slips back into the door can shatter when it lands.
If the window is stuck up, the simplest thing is to leave it alone until we see it. Working the switch over and over can finish off a motor that was only weak.

Power window questions
Is it the motor or the regulator?
If you can hear the motor running when you press the switch, the motor is probably fine and the regulator is the likely failure. If there is silence, the fault is more likely the motor, the switch or the wiring. On many vehicles the motor and regulator are replaced as one assembly.
Can you fix it at my home or work?
Yes. Power window repairs are available at our locations and as a mobile service.
How much does power window repair cost?
Quotes are based on your vehicle’s VIN. There is no diagnostic fee, and replacement parts are supplied by the customer.
Will insurance cover it?
Mechanical wear is normally not covered. If the window was damaged in a break-in, a collision or another covered event, it may be. We will help you check.
My window fell into the door. Is the glass ruined?
Not necessarily. If it dropped without breaking, it can often be re-mounted on a new regulator. Do not try to fish it out yourself.
